Leading from a place of empathy and understanding, just as we do for our clients, enhances the employment experience and fosters more candid conversations, collaboration, and innovation. This, in turn, builds thriving teams and increases employee engagement and retention.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Active listening and Nonviolent Communication (NVC) are two powerful frameworks that support more effective and empathetic communication in the workplace and beyond.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>Active listening<\/strong> is about being fully present with the person you\u2019re communicating with. It involves using eye contact, maintaining open body language, and minimizing distractions\u2014like putting your phone away. Key techniques such as paraphrasing and asking clarifying questions help ensure you\u2019ve accurately understood their message. The primary goal is to help others express themselves and their needs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>Nonviolent Communication (NVC)<\/strong> is focused on expressing your own needs and feelings. NVC consists of three parts:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Observation:<\/strong> What event or situation did you observe? Focus on what you saw or heard without judgment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Feeling:<\/strong> How did that observation make you feel in the moment?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Analysis: <\/strong>What thoughts or interpretations did you form based on the observation and how it made you feel?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Both frameworks complement each other, as shown in the image below. Active listening creates space for others to share, while NVC supports you in clearly expressing your own thoughts and emotions. By engaging in active listening and incorporating nonviolent communication techniques into discussions, supervisors and managers can lead and communicate with empathy. It breaks down communication into three essential steps: what you observed, how it made you feel, and the meaning you attached to it. Help me understand what\u2019s changed for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>This example follows the NVC structure by first describing the observation (being late), then expressing the feeling (frustration), followed by the interpretation (thinking they don\u2019t care about their work), and finally opening the conversation for understanding and resolution.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Chances are, there may be factors outside of work affecting their ability to arrive on time. By utilizing this framework and incorporating the suggested phrases below while actively listening, you can gain a clearer understanding of their perspective:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cHelp me understand\u2026\u201d<\/strong> Rather than, \u201cWhy did you\u2026?\u201d, this phrase reframes the question as an attempt to reach understand and is less accusatory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cThe story I\u2019m telling myself is\u2026\u201d <\/strong>Sometimes we leap to conclusions about the motives behind a person\u2019s actions, and attribute incorrect meanings to events. This phrase helps you express your perspective, while recognizing that there is another perspective to be learned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cI think that would make me feel\u2026\u201d <\/strong>This is great for active listening \u2013 it shows that you\u2019re processing the other\u2019s point of view and gives them a chance to state how the events made them feel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cWhat I\u2019m hoping for is\u2026\u201d<\/strong> When having a challenging conversation, it can be useful to state your ideal outcome. This way, the other person can imagine what that outcome might mean to them and can help you both reach a mutually acceptable resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cWhat does support from me look like for you?\u201d <\/strong>This question is not \u201cnormal\u201d or intuitive \u2013 but it can have a big impact on the other\u2019s perception of your desire to support them. Different people need different kinds of support in different situations, and it\u2019s helpful to ask rather than to assume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-heading\"><div class=\"container\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some additional phrases include:<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>\u201cThat sounds really difficult for you\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>\u201cHow have you gotten through feeling this way before?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>\u201cWhat can I do to support you?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>\u201cThis is too big for the two of us.
