It is most commonly experienced during fall-winter, but some experience symptoms during spring-summer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Symptoms may start out mild and become more severe as the season progresses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-heading\"><div class=\"container\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What causes SAD? <\/h3>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>While the exact cause of SAD isn\u2019t fully understood, the reduced level of sunlight in the fall and winter is thought to play a key role. The lack of sunlight may disrupt the body\u2019s internal clock (circadian rhythm) and cause a drop in serotonin, which affects our mood, appetite and sleep. The change in season can also disrupt our production of melatonin, which affects our sleep patterns and mood.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Especially here in Canada, long, dark winters can have a significant effect on people who are vulnerable to this type of winter-onset depression.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-heading\"><div class=\"container\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms can include: <\/h3>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A persistent low mood&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A loss of pleasure or interest in normal everyday activities&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irritability&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling lethargic, sluggish and\/or sleepy during the day&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleeping for longer than normal and\/or finding it hard to get up in the morning&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Craving carbohydrates, leading to weight gain&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty concentrating&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreased sex drive&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having thoughts of not wanting to live&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p>SAD isn\u2019t just \u201csomething that goes away on its own\u201d, and can get worse if left without attention, potentially leading to:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social withdrawal&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work performance problems&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased substance use&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other mental health disorders&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-heading\"><div class=\"container\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do? <\/h3>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-list\"><div class=\"container\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Light therapy: <\/strong>Light box\/lamp exposure within the first hour of waking- mimics natural outdoor light and appears to cause a change in brain chemicals linked to mood\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lifestyle adjustments: <\/strong>Get as much natural sunshine as possible, strive to maintain a routine that includes time spent outside, and body movement\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dawn simulator: <\/strong>Alarm clocks that gradually increase light to mimic the sunrise\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritize social activities: social connectedness is one of the leading protective factors against depression&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Therapy:<\/strong> Learn healthy ways to cope and manage stress, change negative thoughts\/behavior that may be making you feel worse\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medication: <\/strong>anti-depressants may help, but consult with your GP\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take vitamin D:<\/strong> Vitamin D is produced in the skin when it&#8217;s exposed to sunlight and help to boost serotonin activity, consult with a healthcare professional.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monitor alcohol intake: <\/strong>Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, which may worsen depressive moods\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start a journal: <\/strong>Get out your thoughts, feelings, and track what your grateful for\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set boundaries: <\/strong>If you need to RSVP no to an event, that\u2019s ok\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-heading\"><div class=\"container\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources<\/h4>\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-classic\"><div class=\"container\">\n\n<\/div><\/section><section class=\"wp-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"container\">\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/seasonal-affective-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20364651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)<\/a>&nbsp;| Mayo Clinic<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
