Helping Troubled Co-workers

In a psychologically supportive workplace, co-workers and supervisors are supportive of employees’ psychological and mental health concerns and respond appropriately as needed. While it is not your responsibility to deal with anyone else’s health issues, you may have the desire to reach out to provide some support if you see a co-worker struggling.

Here are some actions you can take to support a struggling co-worker:

  • Explore the situation (focus on what they are needing in the moment)
  • Encourage action – when your co-worker is ready for change
  • Seek additional support (benefits plan, Employee Assistance Plan, community resources, etc)
  • Look after yourself at the same time
