Isolation and Mental Health Over the Holidays

The holidays can be a tough time for many people in the tourism and hospitality industry. While it’s often seen as a season of joy and togetherness, not everyone feels that way. Being away from family, dealing with tough memories, or facing grief and loss can make this season feel isolating instead of festive.

Isolation can show up in lots of ways—long shifts that keep you away from loved ones, the stress of busy days, or simply feeling disconnected from the holiday spirit. For some, it’s even harder because this time of year brings reminders of what they’ve lost.

So, what can help? Building connections and creating a sense of community. Employers can make a difference by fostering a supportive workplace. Team check-ins, shared meals, or even small celebrations can help people feel included. Coworkers can look out for each other too—sometimes just listening or inviting someone to join in can make all the difference.

For individuals, reaching out, sharing a laugh, or spending time with others can help fight that feeling of being alone. Little things like showing kindness, whether it’s to a coworker or a guest, can create moments of connection that lift everyone up.

This holiday season, let’s all work to create spaces where people feel supported and safe—both emotionally and mentally.
