The role of leaders in a non-profit organization is uniquely challenging, and it is taking its toll – both on the well-being of those currently in these roles, and on the capacity of the sector to invite new leaders to step in. There are systems at play, and leaders are paying the price:

  • The exhaustion of never having enough admin support because of the ‘overhead myth’,
  • Corporate-colonial governance structures that lose sight of purpose
  • The constant expectations of funders,
  • The tokenism of recruiting racialized and Indigenous leaders without addressing underlying racism and power dynamics in the organization,
  • The stress of either staff unionization and/or employer/corporate -framed human resource systems and the “us vs. them” thinking this creates, or
  • The chill of lobbying and advocacy laws that keep us from getting at core causes.
