WorkSafeBC Critical Incident Response (CIR) Program

The WorkSafeBC Critical Incident Response (CIR) Program is a confidential service that provides early intervention for workers and employers after a traumatic event in the workplace. Its primary goal is to alleviate immediate stress and reduce the risk of longer-term psychological issues.

Interventions are typically offered within 24 to 72 hours following a critical incident but remain accessible for up to three weeks. These interventions can be conducted individually or in groups and are always voluntary, focusing on the well-being of participants rather than investigating the incident itself.

The interventions are delivered by qualified mental health professionals who help participants manage intense emotions such as fear, sadness, or anger. If additional support is required beyond the initial intervention, up to five hours of follow-up care can be provided. These services are usually covered by the CIR Program, except when a WorkSafeBC claim has been filed, in which case further support becomes part of the claim’s treatment process.

Employers that raise awareness of the WorkSafeBC Critical Incident Response (CIR) Program are able to equip their workplace with a meaningful avenue for managing serious incidents. Recognition of this support demonstrates commitment to employee well-being and helps maintain a positive and resilient workplace, even during challenging situations.
